Why Freezing Rain & Ice is More Dangerous Than Snow for Buses

Many students wonder why schools close when there is only a dusting of freezing rain on the grass, yet remain open during a moderate snowstorm. The answer lies in the physics of tire friction and road treatment constraints.

The Friction Equation

Snow tires and heavy vehicles can maintain a reasonable amount of traction on packed snow. The grooved treads of a school bus tire compress snow, creating friction. However, sheet ice is a different story. Freezing rain forms a completely smooth, solid layer of glaze ice on the asphalt, reducing friction to near zero. A 15-ton school bus sliding on ice has zero steering control, regardless of driver experience.

Black Ice Hazards

Freezing rain is particularly dangerous because it creates "black ice"—a transparent coating that looks identical to dry pavement. Road crews struggle to treat black ice during active rain because the liquid runoff washes salt off the asphalt before it can lower the freezing point. Bridge decks and highway overpasses freeze first because cold air circulates both above and below the pavement.

Weight and Power Outages

Ice does not just impact roads; it also threatens utilities. A 1/4-inch coating of glaze ice adds hundreds of pounds of weight to tree branches and power lines. When winds pick up, branches break and utility poles snap, causing widespread power outages. Schools cannot operate safely without interior heating, lights, and sanitation pumps—prompting immediate closures.
