A detailed look at the mathematical model, weather indicators, and regional constraints that calculate school closure odds.

The Probability Equation

School closures are not random. They are driven by safety thresholds. Our algorithm models closure probability as a function of four primary weather vectors:

Where each sub-probability representing a specific hazard is evaluated relative to regional historical tolerances:

The Four Weather Vectors

1. Snow Accumulation (P_snow)

Calculated as snowAmount / snowTolerance. The tolerance parameter represents the amount of snowfall that typically overwhelms local road salt plows. For example, warm southern states have a tolerance of 0.5 inches, while northern alpine states (like Colorado or Vermont) have a tolerance of 8.0 inches.

2. Freezing Ice / Sleet (P_ice)

Ice is a severe safety hazard. Any ice accumulation above 0.10 inches causes buses to lose traction. Widespread ice accumulation of 0.25 inches triggers heavy weight loads on power lines, resulting in blackouts and immediate school closures.

3. Extreme Cold Temperatures (P_cold)

Calculated when the minimum temperature drops below a state's specific tolerance (e.g. below 15°F in Alabama, or below -20°F in Minnesota). Exposure to extreme cold risks student hypothermia at school bus stops.

4. Wind Speed and Drifts (P_wind)

High wind speeds combined with active snowfall trigger dangerous drifting and reduced visibility. When wind speeds exceed 25 mph during snowstorms, bus transportation becomes hazardous due to whiteout conditions.

Model Limitations & Disclaimer

While our mathematical model is highly precise, weather forecasting is inherently probabilistic. Widespread closures can also be triggered by non-meteorological factors, such as:

  • Local power outages or heating system failures inside school buildings.
  • Road preparation delays due to salt delivery shortages.
  • Superintendents taking a highly conservative approach to avoid traffic gridlock during active commutes.

Therefore, we cap our highest prediction at 99%. Widespread cancellations are ultimately determined by superintendents. Always confirm closures with official district announcements.
